DEARBORN, Mich., March 9, 2012 – Ford F-Series Super Duty customers demand a truck with toughness and capability, yet they still appreciate the amenities that make their driving experience more enjoyable. The 2013 F-Series Super Duty offers both, with a first-ever Platinum series model and the addition of SYNC^® with MyFord Touch^®.

“The F-Series Super Duty Platinum is the latest expression of Built Ford Tough truck luxury,” said Brian Rathsburg, F-Series Super Duty Marketing manager. “It has a distinct appearance and a long list of features to deliver a superior experience. Along with that, it has all of the capability F-Series trucks are famous for.”

Building on the success of the F-150 Platinum light-duty series that debuted in 2009, the F-Series Super Duty Platinum offers customers the ultimate in truck luxury.

Ford pioneered the high-end luxury truck segment in 1999 when it introduced the special-edition 2000 Harley-Davidson F-150. In 2003 the first King Ranch Super Duty arrived, followed by the 2004 Harley-Davidson Super Duty. Today, Ford sells a rich mix of high-end Lariat and King Ranch Super Duty models; the new Platinum will further meet the growing luxury needs of customers and dealers.

Available only in the Super Duty crew cab, it can be ordered as an F-250, F-350 or F-450 pickup and with the Ford-designed and Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke^® diesel engine or the 6.2-liter V8 gas engine.

The Platinum series makes a bold statement with a grille that features a satin chrome surround highlighted by perforated mesh inside. The updated grille is enhanced by a monochromatic bumper and chrome tow hooks.

The exterior of the Super Duty Platinum is lavished in chrome, including the door handles, mirror caps, running boards and exhaust tip. The boxside on both sides of the truck sports the “Platinum” name in chrome letters and the tailgate is trimmed with a satin chrome appliqué, similar to the one used on the F-150 Platinum. Twenty-inch polished-aluminum wheels with painted black inserts round out the stunning exterior design of the Super Duty Platinum.

The interior showcases luxury in the form of unique wood grain appliqués. The steering wheel is heated and leather-wrapped, with genuine wood accents. The instrument panel, center stack and door trims are wrapped in premium wood grain. A new storage area on top of the dash includes two USB ports, audio-video connections, SD card slot and a 12-volt charging port for cell phones and other digital devices.

The driver’s seat has 10-way power-adjustable seating and both captain’s chairs are upholstered with softer, premium leather, which is also used on the armrests and console. Other evidence of fine craftsmanship includes the seats and floor mats, which feature the embroidered “Platinum” logo.

Standard Ford SYNCbrings award-winning voice-controlled connectivity into the cab of the most capable heavy-duty trucks available. With SYNC, Super Duty drivers can connect compatible mobile phones and media players via Bluetooth^® or USB to make calls and play back music using voice control. In addition, drivers will get access to Vehicle Health Report and 911 Assist^®, both no-charge lifetime features, and SYNC Services including traffic alerts, business search and more – all while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The 2013 F-Series Super Duty builds on the foundation of SYNC with MyFord Touch, which is available for the first time. A new 8-inch, high-resolution touch screen display gives drivers easy access to phone, climate control, entertainment and navigation features along with a dramatically expanded voice control vocabulary.

The 8-inch display screen also provides a large, clear view behind the truck when in reverse to help drivers maneuver in tight spaces or line up conventional trailers with the truck’s hitch.

The chassis dynamics have been developed to offer a rewarding driving experience in both models, while car-like interiors and stylish modern exteriors are aimed at broadening the iconic Transit appeal.

Both models are powered by 100 PS, 125 PS or 155 PS versions of Ford’s latest 2.2-litre Duratorq diesel engine, offering class-leading fuel consumption of 6.5 l/100 km (43.5 mpg) for Tourneo Custom and 6.6 l/100 km (42.8 mpg)* for Transit Custom.

The Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom models are built at Ford Otosan’s Kocaeli plant in Turkey. Ford Otosan is one of the most successful joint venture businesses in the auto industry, and is jointly-owned by Ford and Koc Holdings. Its Kocaeli plant has been the home of Ford Transit production since 2001, and to date has built more than 2,250,000 vehicles and exported them to more than 70 countries.

A Robot with Feelings: Ford’s Sense of Quality, Touch Perfected by the RUTH Machine

DEARBORN, Mich., July 17, 2012 – You won’t hurt RUTH the robot’s feelings if you disagree with her, but it’s very difficult to prove your point given her opinions are backed up by mathematical evidence.

Thanks to the Robotized Unit for Tactility and Haptics (RUTH) machine, which arrived in North America earlier this year, Ford knows its 2013 Fusion has an interior that customers want.

Quality can be difficult to express, yet when customers sit in a high-end car, they know by the feel of the trim and the touch of the buttons that the car is special. The sense of touch and the intuitive understanding of quality are innately human characteristics, but how do you measure them? The answer: use a RUTH.

RUTH allows engineers to quantify vehicle characteristics such as softness, roughness, temperature, hardness and comfort. This allows Ford to tailor each vehicle interior to exactly what a customer group wants.

The RUTH robot is a giant arm with six joints, programmed to poke the trims, turn the knobs, push the buttons and interact with many of the vehicle’s interior areas in the same way a person would.

Engineers in North America are finding several different ways to use RUTH. They are the first in the world, for example, to use the robot to measure seat comfort.

Eileen Franko, Ford craftsmanship supervisor, believes RUTH results in greater customer satisfaction.

“Thanks to the data provided by RUTH, we can be sure the customer who buys a car like Fusion will experience the same type of quality they might feel if they were to buy a high-end luxury car,” Franko says. “I might be biased, but RUTH isn’t. We know the steering wheel and the armrest softness in Fusion are the best in the world.”

For years, Ford’s quality interiors resulted from worldwide studies where customers tested various parts, documenting their preferences. RUTH won’t change that. But now, RUTH is involved from beginning to end to determine the feeling of quality.

Interior samples are premeasured by RUTH. Customer test studies are conducted, and after the results are tallied, RUTH supplies the data to implement the finest option into mass production. In other words, quality is no longer a guessing game.

As a relatively new resident to North America, RUTH, first introduced in Europe, is found only in Ford’s product development center. And the robot has already helped engineers improve the quality of many parts of the car.

RUTH illustrates Ford’s commitment to putting high-end products within reach of a larger group of customers.

“We are going further for our customers by more accurately and quickly assessing our products’ performance,” Franko says. “RUTH simulates the motor skills of a real person, allowing us to get precise measurements that explain what the customer wants. Engineers can take the findings and implement them. As a result, when customers sit in an affordable car like Fusion, they’ll feel instantly like they’re in a high-end ride.”

Luke Robinson, Ford metrologist and RUTH technician, says RUTH has increased productivity.

“Before RUTH, many engineers had access only to hand-held measuring tools, and no means to test the interiors in a manner that resembled in-vehicle scenarios,” he explains. “An engineer outside of our department might even have pushed a dictionary and a pop can into an armrest to measure its resistance and softness. But now engineers can contact us and we can put RUTH into a vehicle; within a few hours, we can give them tangible data.

“With years of Ford customer research to tell us where to start,” Robinson adds, “we can use RUTH to measure exactly what the majority of customers want.”

ELABUGA, Tatarstan, Russia, July 4, 2012 – The 5 000th Ford Transit has rolled off the production line today at the Ford Sollers plant in Elabuga (Tatarstan, Special economic zone “Alabuga”). The anniversary vehicle has been an all-metal van in Frozen White colour with a long wheel base and medium line of the body, diesel engine 2,2 l, 125 p.s.

Ford Transit’s production started at the Ford Sollers plant in Elabuga in January 2012. Transit is assembled with Global Puma 2.2.l diesel engine 100, 125, 155 p.s.. In Russia Ford Transit is available in the following modifications: Single cab, Double cab, Bus, Kombi, Van.

Ford Celebrates Fuel-Efficient Escape Launch, Additional Jobs at Louisville Assembly Plant

• Ford has added 1,800 jobs at Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP), with 1,300 more on the way this year to build the all-new Escape, the nation’s most fuel-efficient small utility vehicle with an automatic transmission

• Ford has added more than 5,200 hourly jobs in the U.S. this year alone. With LAP’s third shift, by year-end, Ford is on pace to deliver more than half of the 12,000 new U.S. hourly jobs it committed to add by 2015

• In addition to Ford’s $600 million investment, Louisville-area suppliers are supporting the Escape launch, with several investing more than $56 million and adding more than 900 jobs locally

LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 13, 2012 – Ford Motor Company, its employees, dealers and suppliers today are celebrating production of the all-new Ford Escape at the company’s transformed Louisville Assembly Plant, one of several U.S. manufacturing sites where Ford is adding jobs to meet strong customer demand for fuel-efficient vehicles.

Ford already has added 1,800 jobs at Louisville Assembly Plant and is adding 1,300 additional workers to a third shift this fall, bringing total hourly employment at the plant to 4,200.

Nationwide, Ford has added more than 5,200 hourly jobs already this year. With Louisville’s third-shift in place, by year end, Ford is set to deliver more than half of the 12,000 additional jobs it committed to add by 2015

The company invested $600 million to convert Louisville Assembly from a plant producing body-on-frame SUVs into a facility that builds America’s most fuel-efficient small utility vehicles with automatic transmissions.

“Today marks a celebration of progress and transformation,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas. “Louisville Assembly Plant’s reinvention illustrates how Ford is going further, continuing to invest in American manufacturing and new jobs while delivering even more of the fuel-efficient vehicles that give customers true power of choice.”

The upgraded Louisville Assembly Plant is capable of producing up to six different vehicles at the same time, making it Ford’s most flexible U.S. plant.

As part of the upgrade, Ford installed new tooling and improved equipment in the plant’s final assembly area and body shop, including more than 1,000 robots and 20 miles of conveyors. Reprogrammable tooling in the body shop allows the plant to produce multiple vehicle models at the same time without requiring downtime for tooling changeover.

“Manufacturing flexibility is critical to staying competitive in today’s global automotive marketplace,” said Jim Tetreault, Ford vice president of North America Manufacturing. “Our ability to produce up to six vehicles from a single plant gives us a sizable advantage in quickly adjusting our products and volumes to match changes in customer preferences and market factors.”

Louisville Assembly is the third Ford plant in North America to retool from producing traditional body-on-frame trucks and SUVs to fuel-efficient vehicles from global platforms.

The company’s investment in Louisville is supported by strong partnerships at the state, county and local level, as well as by Ford’s green partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy. Louisville Assembly Plant is one of 11 Ford facilities in the U.S. participating in the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program initiated by Congress and implemented by the Obama administration.

“This is a day of celebration for Ford and the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “Production of the new Escape not only means thousands of jobs for Kentuckians, it boosts our GDP, tax revenue, and raises the level of the Commonwealth’s robust automotive industry, which is already one of the top five in the nation.”

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer added: “This is a great day for our city. Ford’s history and Louisville’s history are intertwined, and today we begin a new chapter in that heritage – a chapter of business expansion and job growth.”

The all-new Escape, which is on sale now, offers strong fuel economy and customers’ choice of two EcoBoost^® engines – a 2.0-liter four-cylinder as well as a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that delivers 33 mpg highway, which is 2 mpg better than the Honda CR-V and 5 mpg better than Toyota RAV4. The Escape also features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 31 mpg highway.

In addition, Escape delivers 11 features no other small SUV offers – including a hands-free liftgate with motion-sensing technology, SYNC^® with MyFord Touch^® and active park assist. The Escape also features a new Ford Intelligent 4WD system that provides even better traction off-road.

The Louisville-built Escape is the first of the new line of compact SUVs to be built off of Ford’s global C-car platform. The same vehicle will be built and sold in Europe and China, where it is called Kuga, although there will be unique powertrains and features for customers in those markets.

Ford’s global supply network is playing a key role in the launch of the Escape, as well as the economic development of the Louisville area. Several major suppliers have invested more than $56 million locally and are in the process of adding more than 900 jobs, many of which will support the Escape. Suppliers that expanded operations include:

• Magna Seating of America Inc., which invested nearly $20 million to build a new 140,000-square-foot plant in Shepardsville, Ky., and will eventually employ 450 people. Magna supplies seat assemblies, fascias, the rear subframe, upper control arms, rear camera module, trailer tow module, fixed back glass and the rear bumper beam
   
• Faurecia, which invested $19 million at its Faurecia Interior Systems plant in Louisville. The facility will have 260 employees at full production – 250 dedicated to producing the Escape instrument panel. Faurecia also supplies exhaust systems
   
• Martinrea International expanded its Shelbyville, Ky., operations with a $12 million investment, adding 150 jobs. Martinrea makes body stamped subassemblies, the front subframe and fuel filler pipe
   
• Piston Automotive invested $5.5 million and added 50 jobs, many of which are supporting the Escape launch. Piston makes cooling module assemblies for the Escape

In addition to its manufacturing presence, Ford continues to play a significant role in the Louisville community. Through its Operation Goodwill with area dealers, Ford and its manufacturing operations expect to donate more than $1.5 million in 2011 and 2012 combined, supporting local nonprofit agencies.
